Fall Family Photos at Carpenter Nature Preserve in Zionsville

Carpenter Nature Preserve is one of the best new places in Zionsville for family photos. It has golden-hour light through the trees, a wooden boardwalk, a rusted steel bridge, open prairie, and a nature play area that keeps young kids happy. I recently photographed a family of four there on a warm October evening, and it may be my new favorite spot.

Is Carpenter Nature Preserve a good place for family photos?

Yes. The preserve gives you a lot of variety in a short walk, which matters when you have little ones. In one session you can get woods, prairie, wood, and steel without loading everyone back in the car.

The preserve opened to the public in summer 2026 on the former Wolf Run Golf Course along Eagle Creek. It covers 215 acres. The entrance is at 601 S. County Road 900 E, with parking and restrooms on site. Because it is so new, most families in town don't have photos there yet.

Where we photographed at the preserve

  • The boardwalk. Clean lines and warm wood tones. The paved trail behind it leads your eye into the trees. This is where we got the classic family portrait.

  • The steel bridge. The rusted railings pick up the orange in fall leaves. It's a great backdrop for individual kid portraits.

  • The wooded edge. At golden hour, the sun filters through the leaves and turns the background into soft gold.

  • The nature play area. A hillside slide and a mud kitchen. This is where the best moments of the evening happened.

How the session went: we let the kids play

Young kids don't want to stand still and smile. So I don't ask them to for very long.

We started with a few posed family portraits on the boardwalk while everyone still had clean socks. Then I let the girls lead. They raced down the slide. The older one spent ten minutes pouring water between cups at the mud kitchen, completely focused. The younger one made a fish face every time I lifted the camera, and we went with it.

Those are the photos this family will keep. The cheek-puff face. The laugh on the bridge. The big-sister hug that turned into a headlock. That's what they look like right now, and it won't last long.

If you're worried your kids won't cooperate, I'd suggest building in time to play. You get better photos, and nobody goes home in tears.

What this family wore (and why it worked)

This family is a good example of coordinating without matching:

  • Three colors, repeated: olive green, black, and cream.

  • Texture over pattern: suede jumpers, ribbed knits, and one simple stripe instead of busy prints or logos.

  • Earthy tones outdoors: olive and black sit well against fall leaves without competing with them.

  • Small details: knee socks, a headband, and black flats. The kind of thing you notice later and smile about.

Most important, everyone was comfortable. The girls could climb, slide, and sit on the ground without anyone worrying about their clothes.

Is it too late to book fall family photos?

Not yet. In central Indiana, fall color usually peaks in mid-to-late October and can hold into early November, depending on the weather. Even after the brightest leaves drop, the light stays warm and golden, and the prairie grasses turn a soft tan that photographs beautifully.

One thing to know: daylight saving time ends on November 1, 2026. After that, golden hour shifts about an hour earlier, which can actually be easier for families with young kids and early bedtimes.

I have 5 fall sessions still open. If you'd like one, reach out here.

Quick FAQ

What's the best time of day for family photos at Carpenter Nature Preserve? The hour before sunset. The trees on the west side backlight your family with warm, soft light. In late October that means starting around 5:45 to 6 p.m. After November 1, plan for about an hour earlier.

How long does a family session take? Usually 1 to 2 hours. With young kids, I plan for breaks and play time so nobody runs out of steam.

What if my toddler won't cooperate? That's normal, and it's fine. I keep posed shots short and let kids explore. Some of my favorite photos come from the moments in between.

Do I have to shoot at Carpenter? No. I photograph families all over Zionsville, Carmel, and Westfield. We can pick a spot that fits your family's style.

Can I print my photos? Yes. Your gallery includes unlimited downloads, and you can order prints, wall art, and albums right from it.
