Why One Headshot Doesn't Cover Everything
A college application photo needs to be simple. Straightforward eye contact, even lighting, a neutral expression that reads as confident without being staged. Admissions readers and scholarship committees see thousands of these — the goal isn't to stand out, it's to look like yourself on your best day.
An audition headshot works differently. Directors and casting teams are looking for range and personality in a still image. That means a session needs room for a few different expressions — something warmer, something more animated — so there's a photo that actually matches the role or program a student is applying for.
For Marianne's session, we shot both in the same afternoon, changing outfits and expression between sets rather than trying to force one photo to do both jobs.
What We Did Differently for Each Look
For the application-style shots, we kept the background simple and the expression steady — a genuine smile, good posture, nothing that would distract from her face. These are the photos that go on a form next to a GPA and an essay; they need to hold up in black and white on a printed page just as well as they do on a screen.
For the audition-style shots, we loosened things up. A few takes with a bigger smile, a few with a more neutral, thoughtful look. The goal was options — something a student can hand off to different programs without needing a reshoot for each one.
